Charlie Emett,James P. Templeton: Carlisle Through Time

Carlisle Through Time

Description

In ad 78/80 the Romans under Agricola established a base near the Solway Firth and called it Luguvalium. From that distant beginning it grew to become England's largest city, stretching to Scotland in the north, the Solway Firth in the west, the north Pennines in the east, and almost to the Lake District in the south. At Cold Fell (2014 feet) it has the largest point of any English city. Carlisle played an important part in being at the centre of the border troubles, and it was the last place in England to know peace. This lavishly illustrated book shows the extraordinary changes that have taken place in this fair city down the centuries and provides a striking account of the changes that have altered Carlisle's appearance. The book acknowledges the transformation that has taken place in Carlisle and celebrates the character and energy of the local people as they move confidently into the twenty-first century.

Description

The classic guide to instructional design, fully updated for the new ways we learn Rapid Instructional Design is the industry standard guide to creating effective instructional materials, providing no-nonsense practicality rather than theory-driven text. Beginning with a look at what "instructional design" really means, readers are guided step-by-step through the ADDIE model to explore techniques for analysis, design, development, intervention, and evaluation. This new third edition has been updated to cover new applications, technologies, and concepts, and includes many new templates, real-life examples, and additional instructor materials. Instructional design is the systematic process by which instructional materials are designed, developed, and delivered. Designers must determine the learner's current state and needs, define the end goals of the instruction, and create an intervention to assist in the transition. This book is a complete guide to the process, helping readers design efficient, effective materials. * Learn the ins and outs of the ADDIE model * Discover shortcuts for rapid design * Design for e-learning, Millennials, and MOOCs * Investigate methods for emerging avenues of instruction This book does exactly what a well-designed course should do, providing relevant guidance for anyone who wants to know how to apply good instructional design. Eminently practical and fully up-to-date, Rapid Instructional Design is the one-stop guide to more effective instruction.

Linking Children's Learning with Professional Learning : Impact, Evidence and Inclusive Practice

Description

Producing evidence that professional development undertaken has an impact on children's learning is an increasingly important issue in education. This book proposes a process model designed to support and enable education professionals to focus on this issue as an integral part of their daily work. This model centres around the identification of professional learning needs in relation to the learning needs of children and focuses on evidence of impact as part of that process. For this model to work effectively, however, there must be a culture which supports, enables and recognises the value and importance of professional learning and development and which is inclusive and child centred. This culture its elements and its development are also addressed and provide the context and underpinning for the model. In the second part of the book research undertaken to develop and pilot the model with a range of education professionals is discussed.

Pete Egoscue,Roger Gittines: Pain Free for Women

Pain Free for Women

Description

-Women today not only deserve but should expect a pain-free, active lifestyle, no matter their age, no matter their previous experience.- Pain Free for Women In his famed San Diego clinic, Pete Egoscue has taught women of all ages and from all walks of life how to use the Egoscue Method for safe, effective, and permanent relief from chronic pain without prescription painkillers, physical therapy, or invasive surgery. Now he shares his specially adapted -Pain Free- program for women to use at home. Whether you suffer from back or neck pain, joint discomfort or sore knees, or need more stamina, improved balance, and extra strength, here is a revolutionary and proven approach to self-care that promises optimal health through a simple set of exercises that will transform the way you move and feel -- forever! Egoscue shows women how to take back their bodies by recovering and restoring a precious health asset -- full, free, flexible motion -- that he believes has been drastically reduced by our modern lifestyle. As Egoscue explains, motion not only develops a woman's body but also maintains and rejuvenates it. Yet as her motion-deprived muscles disengage and weaken, it is common for a woman's body to lose alignment, leading to repetitive stress injuries, persistent pain, and general bad health. Even the simplest activities -- how she sits, stands, walks, works, lifts, and sleeps -- can trigger problems. Focusing on proper alignment, posture, and muscle engagement, Egoscue provides simple but powerful techniques to restore flexibility and function while at the same time boosting energy, revving up the immune system, even raising the body's metabolic rate. The remarkable -E-cises- included within have also been linked to improved ability to fight disease, cope with aging, and recover from accidents and injuries. The -miracle- cure Egoscue offers is, simply, correct motion. Organized by the seasons of a woman's life, Pain Free for Women pays particular attention to age-specific concerns such as puberty, childbirth, and menopause, as well as special issues such as arthritis, PMS, and depression. At the same time, Egoscue shows how women can build a framework of healthy movement that will prevent illness and maintain pain-free good health throughout the journey of life. According to Egoscue, reversing the effects of poor musculoskeletal fitness provides astonishing benefits, including: -Better balance, posture, and breathing, as well as increased resiliency -Effective and safe weight management -Healthy bone density and visual acuity -Heightened sex drive -Delayed symptoms of aging -Peace of mind and general tranquility Extensively illustrated to demonstrate proper placement, posture, and movement, Pain Free for Women offers women of every age the possibility of feeling better than ever before. From the Hardcover edition.

Stephen Hopgood: The Endtimes of Human Rights

The Endtimes of Human Rights

Description

"We are living through the endtimes of the civilizing mission. The ineffectual International Criminal Court and its disastrous first prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, along with the failure in Syria of the Responsibility to Protect are the latest pieces of evidence not of transient misfortunes but of fatal structural defects in international humanism. Whether it is the increase in deadly attacks on aid workers, the torture and 'disappearing' of al-Qaeda suspects by American officials, the flouting of international law by states such as Sri Lanka and Sudan, or the shambles of the Khmer Rouge tribunal in Phnom Penh, the prospect of one world under secular human rights law is receding. What seemed like a dawn is in fact a sunset. The foundations of universal liberal norms and global governance are crumbling." from The Endtimes of Human RightsIn a book that is at once passionate and provocative, Stephen Hopgood argues, against the conventional wisdom, that the idea of universal human rights has become not only ill adapted to current realities but also overambitious and unresponsive. A shift in the global balance of power away from the United States further undermines the foundations on which the global human rights regime is based. American decline exposes the contradictions, hypocrisies and weaknesses behind the attempt to enforce this regime around the world and opens the way for resurgent religious and sovereign actors to challenge human rights.Historically, Hopgood writes, universal humanist norms inspired a sense of secular religiosity among the new middle classes of a rapidly modernizing Europe. Human rights were the product of a particular worldview (Western European and Christian) and specific historical moments (humanitarianism in the nineteenth century, the aftermath of the Holocaust). They were an antidote to a troubling contradiction the coexistence of a belief in progress with horrifying violence and growing inequality. The obsolescence of that founding purpose in the modern globalized world has, Hopgood asserts, transformed the institutions created to perform it, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and recently the International Criminal Court, into self-perpetuating structures of intermittent power and authority that mask their lack of democratic legitimacy and systematic ineffectiveness. At their best, they provide relief in extraordinary situations of great distress; otherwise they are serving up a mixture of false hope and unaccountability sustained by "human rights" as a global brand. The Endtimes of Human Rights is sure to be controversial. Hopgood makes a plea for a new understanding of where hope lies for human rights, a plea that mourns the promise but rejects the reality of universalism in favor of a less predictable encounter with the diverse realities of today's multipolar world."

Red Star Rising: More Chronicles of Pern

Description

For two hundred years there had been peace on Pern - but now the signs were ominous. Violent weather storms and erupting volcanos heralded the coming of the second Pass of Thread, when the red planet would rain down its horrifying harvest which destroyed every living organism on the face of Pern. No human or dragon or animal or plant was safe from the hideous death inflicted by Thread. Weyrs and Holds tried to prepare, but they had serious problems. Over the generations much of the old technology had been lost. AIVAS, the giant information bank, was buried under tons of volcanic ash, and valuable and skilled men and women had succumbed to disease and old age, taking with them the knowledge of a great civilization. They had to prepare as best they could, training the great flights of dragons and ensuring that the Lord Holders did their part by protecting their people in every possible way. Only Lord Chalkin, Holder of Bitra, refused to co-operate. He did not believe in Threadfall. It was a plot of the Weyrs to gain ascendancy over the Holds. He would do nothing to protect Bitra or its people. The Lord Holders and Weyrleaders were of one accord. Chalkin must be impeached and removed from his lands if the planet was to be made safe.

Franz A. J. Szabo: The Seven Years War in Europe: 1756-1763

The Seven Years War in Europe: 1756-1763

Description

In this pioneering new work, based on a thorough re-reading of primary sources and new research in the Austrian State Archives, Franz Szabo presents a fascinating reassessment of the continental war. Professor Szabo challenges the well-established myth that the Seven Years War was won through the military skill and tenacity of the King of Prussia, often styled Frederick "the Great". Instead he argues that Prussia did not win, but merely survived the Seven Years War and did so despite and not because of the actions and decisions of its king. With balanced attention to all the major participants and to all conflict zones on the European continent, the book describes the strategies and tactics of the military leaders on all sides, analyzes the major battles of the war and illuminates the diplomatic, political and financial aspects of the conflict.

Schwartz is also the author of The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less, which has been translated into twenty languages. He can be seen discussing his ideas in his TEDTalks The Paradox of Choiceand Using Our Practical Wisdom. JENNIFER APODACA Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield - weary, demoralised men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound Lulu's Clothes download epub struggle between loyalty and desertion - this gripping, semi-autobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. This edition collects all of the alternative endings together for the first time, along with early drafts of other essential passages, offering new insight into Hemingway's craft and creative process and the evolution of one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Malta Spitfire Vs - 1942: Their Colours and Markings

Description

In the desperate battle for Malta in 1941-2, when German and Italian bombers pounded the island, the arrival of Spitfire Mark Vs helped turn the tables in favour of the Allies. Flown from RN and USN carriers, and some even direct from Gibraltar, the Spitfires significantly enhanced the defences. For many years arguments have raged about the precise colour schemes carried by these aircraft. In this new book Malta-based aviation historian Brian Cauchi looks at all the evidence - from photographs and personal memories through to surviving parts of these aircraft - and presents his personal interpretation of the many colour schemes, official and otherwise, carried by these hard-pressed and hard-working warplanes.

A. S. Byatt: Peacock and Vine: Fortuny and Morris in Life and at Work

Peacock and Vine: Fortuny and Morris in Life and at Work

Description

This ravishing book opens a window onto the lives, designs, and passions of two charismatic artists. Born a generation apart, they were seeming opposites: Mariano Fortuny, a Spanish aristocrat thrilled by the sun-baked cultures of Crete and Knossos; William Morris, a British craftsman, in thrall to the myths of the North. Yet through their revolutionary inventions and textiles, both men inspired a new variety of art, as vibrant today as when it was first conceived. Acclaimed writer A.S. Byatt traces their genius right to the source. The Palazzo Pesaro Orfei in Venice is a warren of dark spaces leading to a workshop where Fortuny created his designs for pleated silks and shining velvets. Here he worked alongside the French model who became his wife and collaborator, including on the 'Delphos' dress - a flowing gown evoking classical Greece. Morris' Red House, outside London, with its Gothic turrets and secret gardens, helped inspire his stunning floral and geometric patterns; it also represented a coming together of life and art. But it was Kelmscott Manor in the English countryside that he loved best - even when it became the setting for his wife's love affair with Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Generously illustrated with the artists' beautiful designs - pomegranates and acanthus, peacock and vine - A.S. Byatt brings the visions and ideas of Fortuny and Morris dazzlingly to life.

Containing ten classic fairy tales by authors such as the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, 'Usborne Illustrated Fairy Tales' includes stories such as 'The Frog Prince', 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'The Swan Princess.' In "The Wait," DeVon and Meagan share the life-changing message that waiting rather than rushing a relationship can help you find the person you re meant to be with. Filled with candid his-and-hers accounts of the most important moments of their relationship, and practical advice on how waiting for everything from dating to sex can transform relationships, allowing you to find a deep connection based on patience, trust, Peacock and Vine: Fortuny and Morris in Life and at Work free download pdf and faith." House of Orphans is bestselling author Helen Dunmore's ninth novel. Finland, 1902, and the Russian Empire enforces a brutal policy to destroy Finland's freedom and force its people into submission. Eeva, orphaned daughter of a failed revolutionary, also battles to find her independence and identity. Destitute when her father dies, she is sent away to a country orphanage, and then employed as servant to a widowed doctor, Thomas Eklund. Slowly, Thomas falls in love with Eeva ...but she has committed herself long ago to a boy from her childhood, Lauri, who is now caught up in Helsinki's turmoil of resistance to Russian rule. Set in dangerous, unfamiliar times which strangely echo our own, the story reveals how terrorism lies hidden within ordinary life, as rulers struggle to hold on to power. House of Orphans is a rich, brilliant story of love, history and change. 'Vivid and exciting ...Dunmore creates a beautiful sense of stillness ...she conveys a passion for Finland's icy landscape' Observer 'Part love story, part tragedy ...Dunmore on dazzling form. Everyone should read her work' Independent on Sunday 'Outstanding, a sheer pleasure to read.
